How to create an assignment for a course lecture

In this article, you will learn how to create assignments within your courses, how students submit their work, and how you can review and provide feedback as an instructor.

What you will need:

Note: Assignments are currently available for classic courses only; they are not available for light courses.

1. Creating an assignment

In the menu, navigate to the Assets tab, click Courses (1), and then click on your course (2).

Select the specific lecture under the module where you want to add an assignment. Click the three dots next to the lecture name and select Create an assignment for this lecture (3).

Once you click to create an assignment, you will be redirected to the setup page. Here you must configure the following:

a. Title (4): Enter a clear name for the assignment.

b. Instructions (5): Use the text editor to provide detailed steps for your students.

c. Assignment requirement (6): Check the box to make the assignment mandatory to unlock the next lecture.

d. Assignment status (7): Toggle the switch to activate or deactivate the assignment.

Once you have finished, click Save (8).

Note: For mandatory assignments, the next lecture is unlocked immediately upon the student submitting the file; they do not need to wait for the instructor's approval to continue.

A blue icon will appear next to the lecture, indicating that an assignment is active.

When the assignment is deactivated, a gray icon will appear next to the lecture.

2. Deleting an assignment

To delete an assignment, click the three dots next to your lecture, then click Edit the assignment for this lecture (9).

Click Delete (10), then click Delete assignment (11).

3. Student submission process

When a student reaches a lecture with an assignment, the instructions will appear. The student must select Click to upload or drag and drop (1) to upload the assignment file.

Once the file is uploaded, the student must click Submit assignment (2), then Confirm (3) to submit it.

Once the assignment is submitted, it will be in a pending state until reviewed by the instructor.

Notes:

  • Students can upload one file per assignment.
  • The maximum file size allowed is 10MB.
  • All file formats are accepted.

4. Reviewing submissions (Instructor view)

To manage and grade all submissions across your courses, navigate to your courses and click on the Assignments (1) tab located in the top menu bar.

On this page, you will be able to see all assignments submitted by all your students in different courses. This page contains the following:

a. Filter bar (2): Use these options to search and filter assignments by email, course, or date

b. Assignments table (3): Displays all assignment submissions with their details (file, assignment status, student name and email, the course's name, the module's name, the lecture's name, and submission date)

By clicking on the three dots, you can download the assignment via the Download file option (4) in order to review the file, then click Approve submission (5) or Reject submission (6) to process the student's work.

When approving or rejecting a submission, a window will appear where you can leave personalized comments for the student (7). Clicking Approve (8) will submit your comment.

Once you approve or reject a submission, the student will receive an email and a notification on their account (student dashboard) to inform them of your feedback.

The student can also see that their submission was approved/rejected and read the comment on the course page.

Notes:

  • Assignment files are stored directly within the assignment feature and do not appear in your general systeme.io file manager.
  • The ability for instructors to delete specific submission files from the assignment dashboard is currently being finalized and will be available in a future update.
